The Colorado Rockies endured a difficult 2024 season, as the team finished last in the NL West with a 61-101 record. Colorado’s in the midst of a massive rebuild, and that effort will continue into 2025. Here’s what the Rockies did this past winter.
Notable Additions
- RP Scott Alexander (1.2 bWAR)
- 2B/SS Thairo Estrada (-0.5 bWAR)
- INF Kyle Farmer (-0.3 bWAR)
- RP Jimmy Herget (0.1 bWAR)
As expected, it was a relatively quiet offseason for the Rockies, one focused on adding veterans on short-term deals.
The Rockies picked up ex-Athletics reliever Scott Alexander on a one-year deal worth $2MM after a strong season in Oakland. Alexander posted a 2.56 ERA last season with the A’s and fits the Rockies’ bullpen to a tee. The 35-year-old is a heavy sinkerball pitcher who gets movement on the ball and produced a heavy GB% (60.7%) last season.
Colorado also added trippy reliever Jimmy Herget after he was claimed off waivers from the Cubs. Herget is an analytics’ darling, as he induces high Chase% (31.9% and Hard Hit% (26.5%) numbers last season. The journeyman reliever doesn’t throw hard but approaches hitter at an extremely low arm slot.
The Rockies also added two infielders: Thairo Estrada and Kyle Farmer.
Estrada carved a hole for himself in San Francisco thanks to his speed, defensive ability, and occasional home run power. The big issue with Estrada at the plate is his penchant for chasing. He can catch up to fastballs but Estrada doesn’t walk a lot and needs to hit to get on base.
Colorado signed him to a one-year deal.
Veteran infielder Kyle Farmer comes over after two seasons in Minnesota. Farmer was slated to be the Twins’ everyday shortstop in 2023. But, that plan changed when Carlos Correa ultimately re-signed with Minnesota later in the 2022-23 offseason.
Farmer still saw significant time thanks to injuries in Minnesota but was never a regular. Last season with the Twins, Farmer hit .214/.293/.353 (.646 OPS) with five home runs and 19 extra-base hits over 107 games.
Notable Losses
- OF Charlie Blackmon (0.6 bWAR) (Retired)
- RP Justin Lawrence (-1.6 bWAR)
- SP Cal Quantrill (1.6 bWAR)
- 2B Brendan Rodgers (1.1 bWAR)
The Rockies non-tendered Cal Quantrill and Brendaon Rodgers after the 2024 campaign.
Quantrill came over in the 2023-24 offseason after Cleveland traded him over to the Rockies. The right-hander was coming off a very difficult 2023 but had a pitch mix suitable for Coors Field.
It was a struggle for Quantrill to get hitters to chase. He ranked in the seventh percentile of said category last season and posted a BB% north of 10%. However, his numbers (4.98 ERA, 7.3% Barrel%) weren’t terrible under the circumstances.
The non-tender of Rodgers was somewhat understandable and expected. Rodgers was a former first-round pick who flashed five tools both in high school and in the Minors. Rodgers, though, never developed into an elite hitter, with 45 home runs and a .725 OPS across parts of six seasons.
Charlie Blackmon, a staple of the Rockies for years, retired after the 2024 season.
What to Expect in 2025
The Rockies’ window hasn’t opened yet.
Colorado has a good farm system, highlighted by Chase Dollander and several big bats, including Adael Amador, Yanquiel Fernandez, and 2024 first-round pick Charlie Condon. However, those names are approximately a year or two away from sticking as regulars at the MLB level.
For now, the job is to improve off the team’s 101-loss campaign in 2024. That might be tough, though, given the state of the NL West.
