Broken hamate bones were a hot topic during 2026 Spring Training, as several notable players suffered the injury. Another player did this past week, as Andrew Vaughn will be out several weeks thanks to one. However, the most notable injury news on the day came out of Philadelphia.

deGrom scratched

The big news from the day was that Rangers pitcher Jacob deGrom was scratched from his scheduled start on March 29 against the Phillies. with neck tightness. Jacob Latz took his place on the day.

It’s not considered a serious issue, as deGrom told the media that he expects to pitch on March 31 against the Orioles.

Vaughn broke hamate bone

Andrew Vaughn suffered a broken hamate bone during the Brewers’ 14-2 victory over the White Sox on March 26.

Vaughn told the media that he believes it happened during his first at-bat of the season on a jam shot. The pain became progressively worse over time before he told management it should be checked out.

The first baseman will miss four to six weeks.

Morel on IL

Marlins infielder Christopher Morel was placed on the 10-day IL with a left oblique strain. He’s expected to miss four to six weeks.

The Marlins recalled Deyvison De Los Santos to replace Morel on the roster.

Fluharty left game

Blue Jays relief pitcher Mason Fluharty was helped off the field on the 28th against the Orioles.

Fluharty was hit with a comebacker from Jeff McNeil at the top of the seventh. He was checked on by John Schneider and the training staff but stayed in the game.

But in the next at-bat, another comebacker, this time from Max Muncy, hit him, and he was removed from the contest.

Rehab assignments

Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler struck out three over three scoreless innings for Triple-A Lehigh Valley. His velocity was down, as Wheeler averaged 93 MPH on both the four-seamer and two-seamer. That is roughly two to three MPH down from where he was before his surgery last year.

In that same game, Orion Kerkering threw a scoreless inning. He averaged 97 MPH on his four-seamer and 94 MPH on the two-seamer.

Padres pitcher Jason Adam threw 1.1 innings in a rehab assignment with El Paso (AAA). Sung Mun Song picked up two hits in his first four at-bats for the Chihuahuas.

Guardians pitcher Hunter Gaddis threw a scoreless inning for Triple-A Columbus. Gaddis averaged 93 MPH on his fastball.

Nationals pitcher Paxton Schultz struck out two over 1.1 IP in a rehab outing with Rochester (AAA).

Other news

Nick Lodolo will throw a bullpen session this weekend (h/t Fox 19).

Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford, currently on the IL, took batting practice before Seattle’s game on March 29 against Cleveland.
