Cleveland did themselves a favor on September 4, taking advantage of a doubleheader against the Tigers. Meanwhile, the Padres were able to move back into a playoff spot after defeating the Yankees in California.
Guardians take DH
The Guardians won both halves of a doubleheader against the Tigers on September 4.
Brayan Rocchio stole the show in Game 1. Detroit was up 6-1 after three, after the Tigers’ offense hit around Logan Allen. But the Guardians scored five in the fourth, highlighted by a Rocchio grand slam. The shortstop then hit a solo home run off Drew Sommers to walk it off.
It was nearly the same story in Game 2, as Travis Bazzana was the hero this time around. Detroit went up 3-0 before the Guardians clawed back to tie it. Bazzana tied it with a home run in the eighth, and then walked it off with an RBI single in the 10th.
Astros widen AL West lead
Thanks to eight strikeouts over five good innings from Cristian Javier, the Astros defeated the Diamondbacks 3-1. And with the Rangers’ loss to the Rays, the Astros were able to put more distance ahead of Texas.
Gabriel Moreno‘s 12th home run of 2026 wasn’t enough to get Arizona back in this game, which Houston held on to from the start. Yainer Diaz hit his 11th home run to make it 1-0. Isaac Paredes drove in one with a double, and a Jose Altuve sac fly gave the Astros another run.
Diamondbacks starter Merrill Kelly allowed three over six innings.
Blue Jays get to .500
The Blue Jays took down the Royals 9-2 to pick up their 71st win of the season, moving to a .500 record.
Yet again, the offense hummed. Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Alejandro Kirk, Ernie Clement, and Myles Straw each had two hits. Sean Keys hit his second career MLB home run in the ninth inning.
Bobby Witt Jr. and Vinnie Pasquantino each hit home runs for the Royals.
Yankees fall in 10
The Yankees dropped the first game of their series in San Diego, 3-2, in 10 innings.
This one was tied heading into the 10th. Xander Bogaerts made it 1-0 with an RBI single in the second. Ben Rice hit his 36th home run of the season to tie it in the third. It wasn’t until the 10th that another run was scored.
Spencer Jones made it 2-1 with an RBI single in the top half. In the bottom half, Luis Campusano hit a two-run shot to walk it off for the Padres. That victory pushed San Diego back into the third NL Wild Card spot.
Braves win in Philly
The Braves and Phillies will play each other twice in September, starting with a four-game series on Labor Day weekend that kicked off on September 4. Atlanta took the first game 5-2.
Chris Sale outmatched Cristopher Sanchez, as he struck out seven over six innings to hold off the Phillies’ offense by and large. Ronald Acuna Jr. had three hits, while Mauricio Dubon had two, one of which was a home run.
With that win, the Braves opened up a five-game lead on the Phillies for the division.
