Ahead of what will be a quiet three-day slate on April 2, it was a busy day across MLB on the first of the month. Both the Yankees and Brewers went to 5-1 on the season, while the Marlins and Sandy Alcantara are tied atop the National League after the first week.
Yankees complete 5-1 road trip
The Yankees finished their first-week road trip with a 5-3 victory over the Mariners, giving the team a 5-1 record to begin the 2026 campaign.
Cam Schlittler had a great day, as over 34% of his pitches resulted in either a called strike or whiff. The right-hander struck out seven and didn’t concede an earned run, which kept his ERA at a sparkling 0.00.
Paul Goldschmidt and Ben Rice both hit home runs for the Yankees.
Sandy goes the distance
The Marlins are now 5-1 on the season, as the Marlins picked up a 10-0 shutout victory in their series finale against the White Sox.
Sandy Alcantara (27.8% Whiff%) was the star of the show. Alcantara struck out seven and gave up just three hits, one of which could be considered a barrel. The righty has yet to give up an earned run this season.
Liam Hicks hit two home runs for the Marlins, while Otto Lopez picked up his first of the year.
Brewers nab early NL lead
The Brewers went to 5-1 on the year after the team picked up an 8-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. Milwaukee, as of now, is tied with Miami for the best record in the National League, although it’s very early in the season.
Jacob Misiorowski struck out seven over six innings for the Brewers in his second start of the year. He was matched by Drew Rasmussen (30.0% Whiff%), and it wasn’t until Griffin Jax imploded late that the Brewers were able to pick up lead insurance.
Skenes back on track
Paul Skenes and the Pirates defeated the Reds 8-3 on April 1, which gave the Bucs a 3-3 record before heading home to Pennsylvania.
Pittsburgh got to Andrew Abbott early, thanks to a three-run Oneil Cruz home run. It was Cruz’s third home run in two games. Bryan Reynolds went deep in the ninth inning for his second home run of the year.
As for Skenes (26.2% Whiff%), the right-hander struck out five over five to earn his first win of the year. It was a much better outing for Skenes, who didn’t make it out of the first inning during his Opening Day start.
Burrows gets first win with Astros
Offseason acquisition Mike Burrows picked up his win with the Astros. Houston defeated the Red Sox 6-4.
Carlos Correa and ex-Red Sox Christian Vazquez hit home runs for the Astros. Burrows navigated trouble in the first and wound up with six strikeouts (34.1% Whiff%) in the victory.
Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet struck out seven but gave up four earned runs against Houston.
Other notes
Gavin Williams (39% Whiff%) struck out 10 over seven scoreless innings for the Guardians. Cleveland defeated the Dodgers 4-1.
The Royals gave up eight runs from the seventh inning onward but held on to win 13-9 over the Twins.
Cubs pitcher Matthew Boyd led the league in total swings-and-misses (20. 39.2% Whiff%) on the day, as the left-hander struck out 10 Angels and picked up his first win of the year.
Colorado outlasted Kevin Gausman (35.2% Whiff%) to pick up a 2-1 extra-inning victory against the Blue Jays.
Nick Pivetta and the Padres won 7-1. Pivetta struck out eight over five scoreless innings.
A leadoff home run from Corbin Carroll was the difference for the Diamondbacks, as Arizona defeated Tarik Skubal and the Tigers 1-0. Zac Gallen tossed six scoreless innings.
Masyn Winn‘s bloop single gave the Cardinals a 2-1 walk-off victory over the Mets.
Chris Sale kept the Athletics in check for six innings for the Braves. Atlanta won 5-1.
Trevor Rogers tossed six scoreless innings for the Orioles, who were able to get to Nathan Eovaldi and win 8-3.
Justin Crawford and the Phillies walked off the Nationals 6-5.
