Just like last Thursday, April 9 was not a busy day across Major League Baseball. Only six games were on the docket, and half of those games were daytime affairs. The day saw the Marlins and Twins continue their surprisingly good starts, while the D-Backs and Athletics won their series in New York.
Marlins beat Reds
The Marlins defeated the Reds 8-1.
It was a grand day for the Marlins, who picked up 12 hits and five total walks in the game. Max Meyer didn’t put up elite numbers, as he walked three, and his Called Strike + Whiff percentage was 28%. Still, he only gave up one run.
Owen Caissie and Javier Sanoja each had three hits.
Rhett Lowder gave up a lot of hard contact, as four of the batted balls in the contest were considered barrels (18.2%). Lowder gave up eight total hits and only struck out two over 5.1 innings.
Athletics take series from Yankees
The Athletics defeated the Yankees 1-0. Tyler Soderstrom drove in the only run, which was an RBI single that pushed Max Muncy home.
Left-hander Jeffrey Springs was exceptional. Springs (35% Whiff%) had 14 swings and misses on the day, tied for the most on the day alongside Rockies bulk pitcher Chase Dollander. He struck out six over seven innings.
Ryan Weathers was excellent in the losing effort. Weathers (31% CSW%, 43% Chase%) struck out seven over eight innings for the Yankees.
Aaron Judge (50% Whiff%) went 0-4 with one strikeout.
Twins move to 7-6
Mick Abel (32% CSW%) pitched very well for the Twins. Abel struck out six over six scoreless to push the Twins past the Tigers.
Josh Bell had a great day with three hits, one of which was a solo home run off Jack Flaherty.
Flaherty struck out six for the Tigers, while Javier Baez had two hits in the losing effort.
D-Backs take series
Nolan McLean was sharp for six innings against the Diamondbacks, as he didn’t allow a run in any of those frames. However, he left in the seventh with two runners on, and Luke Weaver couldn’t stop the D-Backs from scoring.
Arizona put up seven runs between the seventh and eighth innings to beat the Mets, 7-1. Luis Robert Jr. had the only run for the Mets, off a solo home run.
Eduardo Rodriguez (33% Chase%) picked up the win for the Diamondbacks.
White Sox shut out Royals
Speaking of the Mets, two former Met pitching prospects toed the rubber in Kansas City. And at the end of it, Anthony Kay of the White Sox outdueled Seth Lugo.
Kay (31% Chase%) struck out six over 5.2 IP for the White Sox. Chicago’s pitching staff didn’t allow a run in the game.
