The start of the new week meant the beginning of several new series and the conclusion of others. New York (AL) completed a sweep of the Orioles on May 4, while the Cubs took the first game of a pivotal NL Central series against the Reds. Those were just some highlights from the day.
Yankees win fourth straight versus O’s
The Yankees won their fourth straight on the 4th, as Cam Schlittler and the offense propelled the team to a 12-1 win.
It was a group affair for the Yankees, as every starter except Austin Wells picked up at least one hit. Aaron Judge hit his 14th home run of the season, part of a four-RBI night for the reigning AL MVP.
Cam Schlittler allowed one earned run over 5.2 IP.
Cubs take sixth straight
Thanks to a walkoff home run from Michael Conforto, the Cubs were able to take the first game of their series with the Reds 5-4.
Cincinnati was up 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, thanks to home runs from JJ Bleday and Ke’Bryan Hayes. Seiza Suzuki went deep for a three-run shot in that half of the inning. But thanks to a Spencer Steer single in the eighth, the Reds had a shot at stealing a game in Wrigley.
However, in the bottom of the ninth, Pete-Crow Armstrong hit a triple, and was eventually driven in by a Nico Hoerner sacrifice fly. Then, Conforto ended the contest.
The Cubs are now 15-5 on the season at home. Chicago stayed two games in front of the Cardinals, who also won on the 4th.
Mariners win on milestone night
Two home runs were all the Mariners needed for a 5-4 win over the Braves on May 4. Luke Raley hit a three-run shot off JR Ritchie, the rookie who was starting in his home state, in the sixth. That same inning, JP Crawford hit a two-run home run to give the Mariners the lead.
Matt Olson hit his 300th career home run on the night, as he went back-to-back with Ozzie Albies in the sixth off Logan Gilbert to hit the milestone.
White Sox shut out Angels
The mound in Anaheim featured two of baseball’s best-performing pitchers so far this season, between Davis Martin and Jose Soriano. Martin and the White Sox took the night by a score of 6-0.
Martin (36.5% Whiff%) tossed seven shutout innings for the Sox and struck out 10 on the night. As for the offense, Munetaka Murakami and Miguel Vargas both hit home runs.
Soriano gave up five earned runs over four innings, raising his 2026 ERA to 1.74.
