The third full week of January 2026 saw the completion of several major trades. Business was much quieter on January 23, although roster moves were still made. The Mariners acquired former Red Sox pitcher Cooper Criswell, while the Yankees picked up plus defender Michael Siani.
Mets trade Criswell to Mariners
The Mariners announced that the team acquired pitcher Cooper Criswell in a trade with the Mets. Seattle will send back cash considerations for Criswell.
Criswell started the winter with the Red Sox but was designated for assignment in December. The Mets claimed him off waivers shortly thereafter.
The 29-year-old spent last season as a starter in the Minors but worked mostly as a reliever with Boston. He’s a sidearm right-hander who induced a lot of chase (33.3%) out of the zone when he was in the Majors. High-80s sinker, coupled with a cutter, sweeper, and changeup.
Pitcher Jhonathan Diaz was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.
Yankees claim Siani
The Yankees announced that outfielder Michael Siani was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Siani has long been a plus runner and reliable defender in center field. Two years ago, Siani posted a +16 Outs Above Average, tied with Jose Siri for the second-highest in that category alongside Jose Siri.
The problem with Siani, 26, is that his offensive output has been very limited. He’s a career .221/.277/.270 hitter across 383 MLB plate appearances.
Siani was DFA’d by the Dodgers after the team completed the signing of Kyle Tucker.
Kaleb Ort was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.
