Days after Curtis Mead was cut from the White Sox’s 40-man roster, the Nationals acquired him in a trade with Chicago. Additionally, the Marlins promoted former top power-hitting prospect Deyvison De Los Santos from Triple-A.

Nationals acquire Mead

The Nationals acquired former Rays and White Sox infielder Curtis Mead on March 28 via trade. Mead was DFA’d by the White Sox earlier in the month.

It’s been a weird ride for Mead, the Aussie who was once a top prospect in the Tampa Bay system after the team acquired him from Philadelphia in a Minor League trade years ago (fun fact: that trade worked out pretty well for the Phillies, who acquired an A-ball pitcher named Cristopher Sanchez).

Last season between Tampa Bay and Chicago (AL), Mead slashed .233/.299/.321 in 90 games.

Mead hit three home runs in 2025 across 265 plate appearances, all of which came in three consecutive games between May 21 and 25. He’s generally been good at putting the ball in play at the Minor League level, even though it hasn’t translated to MLB success.

Washington DFA’d pitcher Jake Eder in a corresponding move.

In return, the White Sox received catcher Boston Smith. Smith was a sixth-round pick last year out of Wright State and hasn’t played professionally yet. Last season, he cracked 26 home runs as a senior.

Deyvison recalled

The Marlins recalled infielder Deyvison De Los Santos from Triple-A Jacksonville. Whenever he gets into an MLB game, it will mark his debut at the high level.

It’s been quite the ride for De Los Santos, a 2023 Rule 5 Draft pick by the Guardians. He never made it into an MLB game with the Guardians, was sent back to Arizona, and then traded to Miami as part of the A.J. Puk trade in 2024.

Plus-plus power was the hallmark of De Los Santos’ game. Back in 2024, he blasted 40 home runs but the strikeouts were a major problem. He cut down on that in 2025, as De Los Santos struck out just 99 times in 106 games with the Jumbo Shrimp.

Still, he posted a 30.6% Whiff% last season. And, the power (5.9%) dipped significantly, as he cracked 12 home runs in 106 Triple-A games. It was the first time that De Los Santos had never hit more than 20 in a full season.
