We’re still waiting for the trades to start rolling in, as the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline approaches. But there was still some non-trade-related movement on the 29th of July. San Diego designated Matt Waldron for assignment, while Pirates reliever Brandon Eisert was optioned, among others.

Waldron cut by Padres

The Padres designated pitcher Matt Waldron for assignment on July 29.

Waldron, originally a prospect in the Cleveland system, looked like a promising pitcher in the organization after the semi-knuckleballer pitched well as a back-end starter in 2023 & 2024 for the club. However, things have gone awry for Waldron.

This season, Waldron gave up at least one home run in seven of his 10 appearances with the Padres. Most recently, he worked in two-to-three-inning stints with the club.

Contract selections

The Brewers opted to push Shane Drohan back and instead selected left-hander Thomas Pannone from Triple-A Nashville.

Elieser Hernandez is back with the Braves, as his contract was selected by the club.

Recalls & options

Jonathan Pintaro (Mets), John Rave (Royals), Chad Dallas (Blue Jays), Jhostynxon Garcia (Pirates), Hunter Barco (Pirates), Noah Murdock (Pirates), and Chris Roycroft (Rays) were recalled.

Miguel Ullola (Astros), Isaac Mattson (Pirates), Tyler Callihan (Pirates), Brandon Eisert (Pirates), Daniel Espino (Guardians), Connor Thomas (Braves), Gus Varland (Nationals), Garrett Stallings (Brewers), CJ Van Eyk (Blue Jays), and Jose Franco (Reds) were optioned.
