Teams are beginning to trim their 2026 MLB Spring Training roster en masse. One day after the Yankees and Braves were among the many teams to make cuts, five more joined the fray on March 6. The Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Guardians, and Cincinnati Reds were among the teams to cut down their rosters.

Reds cut six

The Reds demoted six to Minor League camp on March 6. Pitcher Darren McCaughan was reassigned to Minor League camp. Infielder Leo Balcazar was demoted to Double-A Chattanooga. Julian Aguiar, Hector Rodriguez, Edwin Arroyo, and Jose Franco were optioned to Triple-A Louisville.

Arroyo, Balcazar, and Rodriguez are among some of the more notable position player prospects in the Reds’ system. Rodriguez had a very good year in Double-A last season, while Arroyo got on top of the ball often.

McCaughan pitched in parts of four MLB seasons between the Mariners, Guardians, Marlins, and Twins.

Guardians demote several to Minor League camp

The Guardians announced that pitchers Yorman Gomez and Austin Peterson were optioned to Triple-A Columbus. Trenton Denholm, Tommy Mace, Tanner Burns, Aaron Davenport, and Cameron Barstad were reassigned to Minor League camp.

Austin Peterson pitched very well in Double-A this past season, which earned him a spot on Cleveland‘s 40-man roster.

Tigers cut five

The Detroit Tigers made some cuts, as well. Jake Miller and Drew Sommers were optioned to Triple-A Toledo, while Josue Briceno, Ben Malgeri, and Matt Seelinger were sent to Minor League camp.

Left-hander Drew Sommers made four appearances with the big club last season. The other one on the 40-man roster who was sent down was Miller, who is recovering from labrum surgeries from this past offseason.

Briceno, meanwhile, is one of Detroit’s best hitting prospects. However, he’ll be out for some time as he recovers from wrist surgery.

Other moves

The Mets demoted reliever Dylan Ross to Triple-A Syracuse.

Angels pitchers Jose Fermin and Jayvien Sandridge were optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake.
