The Boston Red Sox were one of several teams to announce which prospects will be in Spring Training as non-roster invites on January 23. Given that many of the Red Sox’s best prospects & young players are on the 40-man roster, it’s an abbreviated list. Still, there are notable names, including Noah Song and former first-round pick Mikey Romero.

The prospects

Many of the prospects invited to Fort Myers are players who’ve been in the system for some time. That includes pitcher Noah Song, who was drafted way back in 2019.

For those who don’t know Song, the right-hander was a fringe first-round prospect in 2019 who dominated college ball in Navy. Boston selected him in the fourth round in 2019, missed three years due to military commitments, and was a Rule 5 Draft pick by Philadelphia before he was returned to the Sox organization.

Song, now 28 years old, moved into a relief role and capped out at Triple-A this past season. He spent most of 2025 with Double-A Portland, where he struck out 44 over 43 innings and walked 22. Low-to-mid-90s fastball that capped out at 96 MPH in Triple-A, along with a changeup, slider, and curveball.

However, the big prospect in camp as a non-roster invitee is Mikey Romero. Romero, between Double-A and Triple-A in 2025, slashed .245/.300/.452 with 17 home runs and 54 extra-base hits this season.

Romero put up eye-popping power numbers with Worcester, as nine of his home runs and 24 extra-base hits came within 45 games with the WooSox. His Barrel% (13.9%) ranked among the top-30 of all Triple-A players last season. Defensively, Romero spent time at second, third, and short last season.

Where Romero is weak offensively is expanding out of the zone (32.8% Chase% in Triple-A).

As for the other players, the Red Sox invited catchers Ronald Rosario, Nathan Hickey, and Nate Baez, infielder Max Ferguson, as well as pitchers Wyatt Olds, Jeremy Wu-Yelland, and Jacob Webb (not to be confused with the Cubs pitcher). Outfielders Allan Castro, Braiden Ward, and Tyler McDonough are also a part of the group.

Hickey (6.8% Barrel%, 27.6% Whiff%) was a fifth-round pick by the Red Sox back in 2021. The 26-year-old hit .234/.325/.408 with 17 home runs and 42 extra-base hits for Worcester last season.

Baez was just acquired earlier in January by the Red Sox in a trade that sent Tristan Gray to Minnesota. As noted at the time of the trade, Baez did a strong job of getting on base in High-A last season in the Twins organization.

Wu-Yelland, a fifth-round pick by the Sox in 2020, is a left-hander who struck out 51 over 34 innings in Double-A this past year.

Ferguson, 26, slashed .191/.320/.286 with 31 stolen bases over 99 games. He swiped a career-best 61 bases in the 2022 campaign. Boston acquired him midseason in 2022, as part of the trade that sent Eric Hosmer to Boston.
