Just 10 games are scheduled for August 8, 2024. It’s a shortened slate of games, one that could get smaller should the Angels and Yankees not play due to inclement weather. So, what plays look good for the 8th? Here’s a look at our best MLB bets for August 8, 2024.
Our best bets for August 8
Here’s a look at our best MLB bets for August 8 (odds via BetMGM New York Sportsbook):
- Shane Baz over 4.5 strikeouts (+110)
- Charlie Morton under 17.5 outs (-110)
Both Jeffrey Springs and Taj Bradley failed to strike out more than three batters in their outings against the Cardinals. Shane Baz, who owns a roughly average 24.3% Whiff% rate on the season, will look to do different on the 8th.
It’s been a curious start to 2024 for Baz in the Majors, as his Whiff% rate is down from the 30.0+% he recorded in 2021 and 2022. However, he does have five or more strikeouts in four of his first five starts. Baz is a power pitcher by trade, thanks to a hard fastball that can touch the upper 90s, along with a slider and curveball.
He’ll face the Cardinals, a patient team with a 24.6% team Whiff% rate on the season, 13th-lowest in the Majors.
As for our second pick, Charlie Morton will face a very patient Brewers team on August 8. Milwaukee has the league’s second-best on-base percentage (.332) and worked Atlanta’s starters on the 6th and 7th. Bryce Elder surrendered seven earned runs on August 6, while Chris Sale failed to make it through five a day later.
Morton has made it through at least 18 outs in three of his last five. However, Morton can also get in trouble often with walks, as indicated by his 3.3 BB/9 in 2024. Plus, he’s given up at least five hits in his last five outings.
2024 Total Record: 53-47
