Several teams got good news from the injury report on April 15. The Marlins got back outfielder Jesus Sanchez from the injured list, while the Reds returned several key pieces. However, other teams were not as fortunate.
Pirates lose Endy
A day after catcher Endy Rodriguez left the Pirates’ game against the Nationals, Pittsburgh placed him on the 10-day IL with a right hand laceration.
The Pirates recalled pitcher Chase Shugart to replace Rodriguez on the roster.
Another injury for the Cubs
The Cubs lost reliever Eli Morgan to the IL on April 15. Morgan hit the injured list with a right elbow impingement.
In other related news, Javier Assad is on a rehab assignment with Iowa. Assad threw 66 pitches against St. Paul (AAA) and hit as high as 96 MPH during the outing. The right-hander struck out four over 3.1 IP.
Assad may very well be a rotation option for the Cubs shortly, important since Chicago lost lefty Justin Steele for the 2025 season.
Marlins get Sanchez back
Miami got back Jesus Sanchez, who was sidelined by a left oblique strain, from the injured list on April 15.
Sanchez made his MLB debut on the 15th, going 1-5 against the Diamondbacks. He notched three hits with Jacksonville (AAA) on a rehab assignment before he returned to the Marlins.
Reds activated Diaz & McLain
The Reds got back three key pieces of their team on April 15. Infielder Matt McLain and reliever Alexis Diaz were activated from the 10-day IL. Outfielder Austin Hays is also back and he made an immediate impact, as he notched two hits, including a home run, on the 15th.
Manager Terry Francona said before the game that Alexis Diaz would not immediately return to the closer’s role. There was some discussion before the season and before Diaz went on the IL that he would not be the Reds’ closer heading into 2025.
Thus far, Emilio Pagan has four saves and a 1.08 ERA with the Reds.
Other injury news
Cardinals pitching prospect Cooper Hjerpe is done for the 2025 season. Hjerpe underwent Tommy John surgery.
Yankees pitcher Clarke Schmidt will be activated off the IL on April 16 and start against the Kansas City Royals.
The Twins saw two players leave the game on April 15 against the Mets. Matt Wallner and Carlos Correa were the two individuals. Wallner left with hamstring tightness, while Correa is dealing with left wrist soreness.
Clayton Kershaw will rehab with Oklahoma City (AAA) tomorrow as he begins to get going for the 2025 season.
Mets pitcher Griffin Canning will not make his scheduled start on April 16 due to an illness.
