Alexis Diaz’s time in Los Angeles may have come to an end, as the Dodgers designated the reliever for assignment after nine innings for the team. Aside from that move, the Cubs brought in Billy Hamilton, injecting a speed option into the organization over the final few weeks of the year.

Diaz cut by Dodgers

The Dodgers designated reliever Alexis Diaz for assignment on September 4, a corresponding move to get catcher Ben Rortvedt on the team’s 40-man roster. Los Angeles needed an extra catcher due to an injury.

Diaz, a former NL All-Star, was traded to the Dodgers from the Reds in May after what was a quick fall from grace. The 28-year-old was the Reds’ closer from late 2022 through the 2024 campaign. However, he couldn’t land the slider the way he did years ago and gave up considerably more well-hit contact.

The right-hander threw nine innings for Los Angeles. Diaz walked two and gave up two home runs across nine innings. He posted a 5.00 ERA.

Per MLB rules, individuals with three-plus years of service time can reject an outright assignment in favor of free agency. Diaz meets that requirement.

Hamilton signed by Cubs

The Cubs announced that Billy Hamilton signed a Minor League deal with the team. It officially happened on August 31, making Hamilton eligible for the postseason.

Hamilton hasn’t played affiliated baseball since 2023, when he returned to the White Sox after being a sparkplug for the team two years earlier. He did play in the Mexican League for Jalisco this year and also participated in the Caribbean Series.

Other moves

Here’s a look at other moves made on September 4:

• The Braves released Cal Quantrill. Quantrill, claimed off waivers from the Marlins a few weeks ago, gave up five home runs across eight innings for Atlanta.
• Logan Davidson (Angels) and Jose Castillo (Mariners) were both activated. Both were claimed off waivers.
• White Sox pitcher Bryse Wilson, signed last winter by Chicago, was designated for assignment.
