The Blue Jays were already down in the starting rotation department thanks to Shane Bieber’s forearm injury. Now, add Jose Berrios to the list of injured pitchers for Toronto, as the veteran righty will miss the start of the year thanks to a stress fracture.

Berrios to miss start of 2026

The Blue Jays announced that pitcher Jose Berrios was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his elbow.

He is pain-free, per manager John Schneider, and the plan is for Berrios to start throwing again soon. However, the right-hander won’t be available for the start of the 2026 season.

This news comes days after Berrios was scratched from a scheduled Spring Training start thanks to what was deemed elbow inflammation at the time.

Vasil requires elbow surgery

White Sox pitcher Mike Vasil will require Tommy John surgery.

Vasil, a former Rule 5 Draft pick who spent last year out of the Chicago bullpen, was removed from his outing this past weekend thanks to reported elbow soreness.

Pena progressing

Astros manager Joe Espada told the media on the 18th that Jeremy Pena has resumed throwing since he suffered a finger fracture several weeks ago. Espada stated that Pena will also be swinging a bat this coming weekend.

It’s unknown at this point whether Pena will be available for Opening Day. The Astros have not ruled him out for the start of the year.

Crawford’s status uncertain

Mariners manager Dan Wilson stated that J.P. Crawford received an injection to his injured shoulder and will be shut down for the next few days.

His status for Opening Day is uncertain (h/t Seattle Times).

In other Mariners-related news, Bryce Miller threw roughly 30 pitches in a bullpen session on March 17. He is recovering from oblique inflammation.

Other news

The Cubs confirmed on the 17th that outfielder Seiya Suzuki was diagnosed with a PCL sprain in his right knee. He will be shut down in the interim.
