For the first time since Game 5 of the 2024 World Series, the Dodgers were back in Yankee Stadium. The Dodgers/Yankees matchup headlined the first big day of baseball back from the break, which also saw two impressive wins from the Yankees’ marquee rival.
Red Sox sweep doubleheader
The Red Sox won 10-0 in Game 1, as the Rays had just three hits. Jake Bennett tossed six scoreless, while Carlos Narvaez and Masataka Yoshida both went deep.
In the second game, Wilyer Abreu went deep twice, while Willson Contreras went deep for his 21st home run of the year.
With those two wins, the Red Sox now have an 11-game winning streak and now stand at 48-48.
Dodgers get win back in Yankee Stadium
Max Muncy hit a two-run shot off Gerrit Cole on the righty’s final pitch of the night, which gave the Dodgers a 2-1 victory over the Yankees.
For almost all of the night, it was a pitcher’s duel. The Yankees scored their lone run off a passed ball from Dalton Rushing, and Roki Sasaki helped keep the team in check.
Jack Dreyer picked up the win, while Tanner Scott notched his 14th save of the season.
Braves blow out Rangers
It was all Braves on July 17, as Atlanta defeated the Rangers 15-1.
The Braves had 19 hits on the night. Austin Riley, Drake Baldwin, and Matt Olson all went deep. Michael Harris II drove in three, while Baldwin had five RBI.
Victor Mederos finished out the game with two innings after Chris Sale tossed seven scoreless. But because the Braves brought DH Dominic Smith in to take Matt Olson off his feet, Mederos had to hit. And he picked up his first big-league hit, a two-run single, off Rangers catcher Kyle Higashioka.
Brewers win #60
The Brewers picked up their 60th win of the season off an extra-innings single from Garrett Mitchell, which vaulted the Brew Crew to a 2-1 victory.
Griffin Conine (Marlins) and Joey Ortiz (Brewers) both hit solo shots on a night dominated by the two starters, Logan Henderson and Sandy Alcantara.
White Sox put up 12 in Toronto
On a night where several ex-Blue Jays pitched against their old team, the White Sox’s offense put up 12 on the reigning AL champions.
It was a grand night for the rookies. Sam Antonacci had two hits, one of which was his seventh home run of the season. And Braden Montgomery drove in four for the White Sox. Colson Montgomery, who’s not a rookie, had two hits and three RBI.
Luis Urias, Brandon Valenzuela, and George Springer all hit home runs for the Blue Jays in the 12-4 loss.
