The Pirates failed to make up ground on some of the NL teams that lost on July 25, as the Cubs put up 11 on the club. Plus, the Rangers were able to gain more distance between themselves and the Seattle Mariners.
Rangers win against the Mariners
The Rangers picked up nine hits and five runs off Bryan Woo, as the Rangers beat the Mariners 7-1 in Arlington.
Nathan Eovaldi was sharp, as the righty struck out eight over seven innings and allowed just one run. Joc Pederson and Wyatt Langford each had three hits, while Ezequiel Duran had two hits, plus two RBI.
Cubs shut out Pirates
Shota Imanaga and the Cubs defeated the Pirates 11-0.
Yet again, it was another one of those outings for Paul Skenes. Skenes struck out 11 but had trouble keeping runners off base, which is why he allowed five earned runs against the Cubs.
Five players had two or more hits for the Cubs, including Pete Crow-Armstrong. Crow-Armstrong had four hits, one of which was his 23rd home run of the season.
Red Sox’s bats silenced
It was a rare off day for Sonny Gray, who allowed 10 hits and five earned runs. But it was business as usual for Dylan Cease, who struck out 12 in a complete-game shutout against the Sox.
Cease added to his case to win the 2026 AL Cy Young, as he lowered his ERA to 2.46 and now has 167 strikeouts. He passed Cam Schlittler for the American League lead in said category.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Ernie Clement each had three hits, while George Springer had a home run and three RBI.
Astros pick up win
The Astros defeated the White Sox 4-1 to keep pace with the Rangers in the AL West.
Isaac Paredes had two hits and drove in three of Houston’s four runs. Jeremy Pena had three hits and two RBI. Hunter Brown controlled the game, as he struck out seven over seven scoreless innings for the Astros.
Sean Burke struck out 10 in a losing effort.
Martinez, Rays beat Guards
Nick Martinez tossed six scoreless innings for the Rays, as Tampa Bay picked up another win against the Guardians.
A Junior Caminero double started the scoring for the Rays in the fifth, which wound up being the game-winning run in a 3-0 victory. A Cedric Mullins sac fly and Hunter Feduccia in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, gave Tampa Bay the other two runs.
