Heading into August, the two teams that were in the 2025 ALCS are currently under .500 and fighting for life in the playoff race. But the two clubs won on August 1. Kevin Gausman won in his potential Toronto finale, while the Mariners stayed pace with the Rangers and Astros after walking it off at home.
Gausman wins in potential final Toronto start
Kevin Gausman gave up nine hits on August 1 against the Cardinals in what may very well be his last start as a Blue Jay. But he only allowed one run, as the Blue Jays defeated St. Louis 5-1.
George Springer and Alejandro Kirk were heavily responsible, as the two combined to drive in four for Toronto. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. picked up two hits and scored one run.
Quinn Mathews, in his MLB debut, struck out three and allowed two earned runs over five innings.
Mariners pick up big win
In desperate need of a win, the Mariners nearly had things collapse on August 1. However, a walk-off against the Twins netted Seattle a 4-3 win.
Seattle went up 3-0 early in the game. The Twins were able to chip away at the lead, as solo shots by Luke Keaschall and Trevor Larnach trimmed the lead to one. And in the seventh, a Victor Caratini groundball helped Brooks Lee score to tie it.
But in the ninth, a sharply-hit groundball by Cal Raleigh to Royce Lewis earned an unassisted out with the bases loaded with one out. Lewis looked to second for the double play, opted to go home but Randy Arozarena slid in safely to give the Mariners a victory.
Sanchez wins 14th game of 2026
The Phillies picked up 10 hits in a 5-0 victory over the Orioles on August 1. The story, though, was Cristopher Sanchez.
Sanchez padded his Cy Young resume with a masterful performance against the Orioles. The left-hander struck out 11 over six scoreless innings, earning his 14th win of the year.
Astros take series from Rangers
The Astros defeated the Rangers 5-4, giving Houston some insurance in the AL West race.
Houston’s bullpen held it down after Ronel Blanco went 4.2 IP. Five relievers kept the Rangers in check, with the only damage coming via an Elias Diaz solo shot off Enyel De Los Santos.
Jacob deGrom walked five and allowed five earned runs over 3.1 IP.
Padres walk it off
The Padres improved to 57-54 thanks to a 6-5 walk-off win versus the Giants.
Jake Cronenworth had two hits, one of which was a walk-off single against reliever Dylan Smith.
