The Dodgers’ road trip came to a merciful end on August 9, as Los Angeles lost in their last game before returning home. And in other news from the day, the Brewers picked up a big win, as did the San Diego Padres.
White Sox win after long rain delay
The White Sox took a critical 5-3 victory over the Guardians on August 9.
Cleveland was up 2-1 after the first, before a rain delay that lasted over two hours and knocked out starters Joey Cantillo and Davis Martin. That allowed Hagen Smith, who was promoted one day earlier, to make his MLB debut. Despite four walks, the lefty struck out three over two scoreless.
Smith was credited with the win, as the White Sox scored four in the bottom of the third. Randal Grichuk tied the game with an RBI double. Later that inning, Colson Montgomery hit a three-run shot to make it 5-2.
Reliever Trevor Richards walked two and allowed one run in the ninth, earning his first save of the season.
Arizona takes series from Dodgers
In a battle between All-Star pitchers Justin Wrobleski & Eduardo Rodriguez, it was the latter who came out on top in a 4-2 win for the Diamondbacks.
Ketel Marte‘s 20th home run off Wrobleski in the first made it a 2-0 game. A Ryan Waldschmidt sac bunt, coupled with a Gabriel Moreno RBI single, gave Arizona a 4-0 lead. The Dodgers got within two after runs in the third and sixth.
Rodriguez struck out nine over seven strong innings.
Brewers win thriller
What a wild game in Milwaukee, as the Brewers defeated their old AL rival, the Twins, in a 4-3 extra-innings win.
The Brewers went up 1-0 in the first courtesy of a Jackson Chourio home run. Brooks Lee tied it with a solo shot of his own in the fifth. Milwaukee then added two in the bottom half, as Jake Bauers went deep and David Hamilton hit a double to drive in Gary Sanchez.
But in the sixth, the Twins got to Jacob Misiorowski. Misiorowski, who became the first in the Majors to 200 strikeouts this season in the third, allowed Kody Clemens‘ 20th home run, a two-run shot, to tie it.
The game was tied in the tenth. And Kody Clemens nearly gave the Twins a lead off a backed-up breaking ball hit to right field. But Luis Lara made a splendid catch, hitting the wall to prevent an extra-base hit.
Later that inning, Jake Bauers drove in Brice Turang to win it.
Braves win in extras
The pitchers took up the story in The Bronx on August 9. And in the end, the Braves defeated the Yankees 2-1 to wrap up the series before facing the other New York team in Atlanta.
To state that pitchers dominated the day would be an understatement. Chris Sale, one day after a heated balk call, was thrown out before the game began. Braves pitcher Grant Holmes tossed six scoreless innings, and Cam Schlittler struck out 11 over seven strong.
Atlanta jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the seventh after Matt Olson hit his 34th home run of the year off Cam Schlittler. One inning later, Trent Grisham tied the game with a solo home run off Didier Fuentes.
Michael Harris II hit an RBI single in the 10th that wound up being the difference.
Padres defeat Houston on Sunday night
The Padres hit four home runs, and San Diego defeated the Astros 7-2.
Daulton Varsho, acquired at the deadline by Houston, hit a two-run shot to make it 2-0 in the second. But the Padres quickly got one back from Jackson Merrill, who hit a home run in the bottom half of that inning. And in the fourth, a Fernando Tatis Jr. three-run home run made it 4-2.
Gavin Sheets and Austin Hays also hit home runs. Hays, who came off the bench, signed with the Padres on a Major League deal on August 9.
