Over the past week, the Rays put even more distance between themselves and every other team in the American League. Tampa Bay headed home with a perfect road trip. Meanwhile, in Southern California, the Padres took down the Brewers once more in San Diego.
Rays perfect on road trip
The Rays defeated the Athletics 8-4 on August 13, ending the club’s road trip on a perfect note. Across three cities (Denver, Seattle, Sacramento), the Rays won every game on their road trip, which pushed the club’s record to 74-46.
Midseason acquisition Liam Hicks played a big role in the win, as he had three hits, including a home run and a double, and three RBI.
Jonny DeLuca also had three hits, while Yandy Diaz, Junior Caminero, and Cedric Mullins each had two.
Padres walk off Brewers
Luis Campusano‘s walk-off single pushed the Padres to a 4-3 win over the Brewers, completing the three-game sweep.
For much of the game, it was in the Brewers’ hands. Gary Sanchez hit a solo shot in the second inning off his old team to make it 1-0, and Brice Turang made it 2-0 with a single in the third. Dustin May was excellent in his contest, as he allowed just one run over seven strong frames.
But in the eighth, Jake Cronenworth tied it with a single. Gary Sanchez made it 3-2 in the 11th with a double, before the Padres scored two. One was from Jackson Merrill‘s sac fly, while Campusano ended the game after he drove in Sung-Mun Song.
Bregman powers Cubs
It was the Alex Bregman show in the Nation’s Capital.
The Cubs were able to chase Jackson Kent, who made his MLB debut on the 12th, in the fifth. It was that inning that Bregman hit his first of three home runs. Bregman hit home runs off Jake Bird, Yovanny Cruz, and Trevor Williams. Dansby Swanson also got into the act, as he hit his 18th home run of the year in the eighth.
David Peterson and Javier Assad covered all nine innings for the Cubs in their 12-6 victory.
Guardians defeat Tigers
The Guardians won 6-4 on August 12, picking up a much-needed victory over the Detroit Tigers.
Cleveland’s trade deadline pickups loomed large. Jo Adell hit a two-run shot off Framber Valdez in the fifth, while Foster Griffin allowed only one run over five innings.
Angel Martinez had three hits in the win.
Mariners lose again
The Yankees won 10-5 over the Mariners, which gave New York their 68th win of the season.
Seattle jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first. Randy Arozarena hit a two-run home run that just stayed fair next to the right-field pole, while Julio Rodriguez hit his 19th home run of the year shortly thereafter. But the Yankees chipped away throughout the day.
Down 5-3 in the fifth, Trent Grisham hit a solo home run to pull the Yankees to within one. Spencer Jones drove in Ben Rice to tie it in the same inning. And in the seventh, Grisham drove in George Lombard Jr. with a double, making it 6-5 New York. The Yankees would tack on four more.
With that loss, Seattle is now 56-65 on the season.
