The final day of August saw some wild games. Boston won a wild game in extras, the Yankees were blown out by the Angels, and the Chicago Cubs’ offense blew through Milwaukee in what will be the first of seven games between the two clubs over the next 11 days.
Story walks it off
Trevor Story hit a walk-off single to help the Red Sox defeat the Mariners 9-8 in 10 innings.
On a day when the Red Sox saw Mickey Gasper and Jarren Duran hit early home runs, the Mariners were up 8-5 heading into the eighth. Story made it 8-7 with a two-run double in the eighth. A Ceddanne Rafaela sac fly tied it up in the ninth going into extras, before Story finished it with the bases-loaded one inning later.
Randy Arozarena and Cal Raleigh each hit home runs for the Mariners. Arozarena belted his 21st of the season, while Raleigh got up to 20.
Cubs hit nine home runs
On the last day of August, two MLB teams — not NFL teams — played a 17-3 game in Chicago. The Cubs came out on top, thanks in large part to their torrid offense.
Alex Bregman had his second three-home-run day of the month, part of a day in which the club hit nine total homers. Tyrone Taylor, Nico Hoerner, Michael Conforto, Seiya Suzuki, Matt Shaw, and Carson Kelly also hit homers against the Brewers.
Kyle Harrison surrendered nine of those runs. Andrew Vaughn, in two innings of mop-up, allowed seven runs.
King shuts down Reds
After a tough series in St. Petersburg, the Padres got back on track with a 5-0 victory over the Reds.
Michael King was the story in this game, as the right-hander tossed six scoreless innings, lowering his 2026 ERA to 3.11. The Padres picked up 15 hits in the game, three of which came from Ty France and four from a struggling Manny Machado.
Brady Singer went just 4.1 IP for the Reds.
Stock wins first game since 2019
Journeyman pitcher Robert Stock went 5.1 scoreless innings on August 31 for the Mets, as New York took down the American League-leading Rays 3-2.
Mark Vientos, in his first game back from the IL, was all over this one. The first run of the game came in after Vientos grounded into a double play on the fourth. Then, in the seventh, Vientos hit his 12th MLB home run one day after he hit three with Triple-A Syracuse.
Rays starter Ian Seymour struck out 10 over 6.1 IP.
