Yes, September is near, and so is the end of the Minor League season. This is the final week of the year for A-ball clubs before the playoffs. And this past week, there were some standout performers from both High-A and Low-A. Those are just some notes from Week 22.
Five-home-run weeks
Two Minor Leaguers had five-home-run weeks, although it’s not fair to state that one is actually a Minor Leaguer.
Catcher Jason Schiavone, who bullied his way through High-A Asheville this year before moving to Double-A, has not hit as well with Corpus Christi. But he cracked five home runs over the past week, giving him an even 30 for the season.
The other was Mark Vientos, on rehab with the Syracuse Mets. Vientos hit three home runs on the 30th.
Major Leaguers hitting
Speaking of Major Leaguers in the Minors, several of them had good weeks in the Minors.
Marco Luciano cracked 10 hits, four of which were home runs over six games with Triple-A Scranton. Luciano was tied with Kyle Manzardo (Guardians) for the second-most hits in the week down in the International League.
Jeimer Candelario (Angels) hit two home runs in Triple-A Salt Lake. Hyeseong Kim led all Pacific Coast League batters in total hits (12).
In Double-A, Jordan Groshans hit four home runs in six games with Columbus.
Big week for Double-A outfielders
We’ll start in the Eastern League, as prospects Justin Gonzales (Red Sox), Trevor Cohen (Giants), and Zyhir Hope (Tigers) each had 10 hits for their respective clubs over the last week.
Hope’s numbers since joining the Tigers organization have not been as great, compared to what he was doing in Tulsa. Still, his numbers have not been terrible at all. The 21-year-old slashed .234/.341/.377 with three home runs and five extra-base hits, plus five stolen bases, over 20 games with Double-A Erie.
Diamondbacks outfielder Avery Owusu-Asiedu, meanwhile, hit three more home runs this week for Double-A Amarillo. Owusu-Asiedu, acquired by Arizona last winter for reliever Kyle Backhus, is up to a career-best 24 home runs on the season. And 11 of those have come in 18 games with the Sod Poodles.

- P Brian Curley (AA – ARI): nine strikeouts, no runs over five IP
- OF Maxton Martin (A+ – TEX): nine hits, four home runs over six games
- INF Cody Schrier (A+ – MIA): 10 hits, four home runs over six games
- INF JoJo Parker (A+ – TOR): 10 hits over five games
- OF Darlyn De Leon (A – CHC): seven hits, three home runs over six games
- 1B Tyce Armstrong (A – NYY): eight hits, three home runs over four games
- INF Estevan Moreno (A – SEA): 10 hits, three home runs over six games
