It was a big day across Major League Baseball on June 5, as multiple rivalry series started up. The Red Sox & Yankees renewed acquaintances, while the Battle of Florida and the Freeway Series both got going again. Plus, the Mariners and Tigers faced off in a 2025 playoff rematch.
Giants win in Cabrera’s return
The Giants scored 18 runs against the Cubs, defeating Chicago 18-3.
San Francisco jumped on Edward Cabrera, who returned from the IL on the 5th, immediately. After a Luis Arraez, Willy Adames hit his first of two home runs on the day in Wrigley Field.
Casey Schmitt and Matt Chapman also went yard. Chapman picked up eight RBI on the day.
The Cubs’ bullpen didn’t keep the team in the game. Ten runs were surrendered by the pen, six of which were charged to Hoby Milner. Two were on catcher Carson Kelly, who had two hits in the game and was relegated to mop-up duty in the final frame.
Kelly gets tagged in Arizona
The Nationals went deep five times in a resounding 14-1 victory over the Diamondbacks.
It was not a good night for Merrill Kelly, who gave up three homers and seven earned runs over five innings against Washington. The real positives from the game for Arizona were that Geraldo Perdomo and Tommy Troy each had two hits.
Washington picked up 16 total hits. Daylen Lile had three, one of which was a home run. Luis Garcia Jr. had two home runs, while James Wood and CJ Abrams also went yard.
O’s beat Yesavage, Blue Jays
The Orioles won 13-3 over the Blue Jays, as Baltimore put up six on Trey Yesavage and seven more on the bullpen.
It was a great night for Adley Rutschman, who picked up four hits. One of those four hits was his eighth home run of 2026. Jeremiah Jackson and Colton Cowser each picked up two hits. Coby Mayo picked up his eighth home run against Yesavage.
ALDS rematch in Detroit
Framber Valdez struck out five and gave up just one earned run over five innings, helping the Tigers defeat the Mariners 7-3 in a 2025 ALDS matchup.
Kerry Carpenter and Spencer Torkelson both hit home runs for the Tigers, and Gleyber Torres picked up three hits and two RBI.
Julio Rodriguez, Rob Refsnyder, and Josh Naylor each had two hits for Seattle. Bryan Woo struck out seven but gave up five earned runs over 6.1 IP.
Boston beats New York
It was a good night for the Red Sox, as Boston bested the Yankees 5-3 in New York.
Willson Contreras had two hits, one of which was a home run, and three RBI, while Andruw Monasterio hit his second as a Red Sox. Sonny Gray went 6.1 IP for the Sox in the win.
Ben Rice and Trent Grisham went deep for the Yankees. Spencer Jones, meanwhile, picked up three hits in his first game back with the big-league club.
