Luis Gil is headed back to the Minors, as the Yankees announced that he will return to Triple-A on April 27 after his most recent start in Houston. It was one of several moves made on the 26th, a day that also saw Jordan Romano cut by the Angels.
Angels designate Romano for assignment
The Angels designated reliever Jordan Romano for assignment on April 26.
Romano started the 2026 season as the Angels’ closer, months after Los Angeles signed him as a buy-low candidate. The very early returns were fine — but these past few weeks have not been.
Among relievers who pitched in at least five games between April 7 and April 25, Romano’s 27.00 ERA was the worst in Major League Baseball. Over that span, he conceded 11 hits and four walks over three innings for the Angels.
Gil back to Triple-A
After his start on April 26, the Yankees optioned Luis Gil to Triple-A Scranton.
Given that the Yankees are closing in on getting back Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon, both of whom are on rehab assignments, someone in that rotation was going to get the short stick. Gil, though, didn’t make it easy on himself.
The former AL Rookie of the Year gave up six earned runs against the Astros over four innings on the 26th. Two home runs, three walks, and five total hits were on his ledger.
