The post-Trade Deadline roster aftermath continued on August 5. Several veterans, most notably Marcell Ozuna, were designated for assignment. Toronto, meanwhile, added Matt Waldron off a waiver claim.
Waldron claimed by Blue Jays
The Blue Jays claimed pitcher Matt Waldron off waivers from the Padres.
Waldron, who was DFA’d last week by San Diego, is a quasi-knuckleballer who spent several years as part of the Padres’ rotation over the last three seasons. However, he was stung by the home run ball before he was eventually cut by the club.
DFA’s
The Pirates designated DH Marcell Ozuna for assignment. Needless to say, it was not a productive year for the veteran, who as of August 5 was 230th in wOBA (.275) among the 241 Major Leaguers with 250+ plate appearances this season. Ozuna was signed to a one-year deal over the winter.
Guardians infielder Gabriel Arias was also DFA’d. Arias played in 42 games for the club this season. A highly-aggressive hitter, Arias slashed .244/.284/.386 with eight extra-base hits, five of which were home runs.
The White Sox DFA’d Austin Hays, who played just 12 games with the club this season. He spent most of 2026 on the IL.
Lastly, Zack Littell was designated for assignment by the Nationals. Littell, who had a 4.97 ERA heading into August 5, had the fifth-highest HR/9 (2.01) in the Majors among starting pitchers with 85+ innings.
