Spring Training cuts continued on March 2. St. Louis trimmed down its roster on the 2nd, as 11 players were either optioned or reassigned to the Minors. Additionally, the Dodgers pushed Jack Suwinski to Triple-A, while the Royals made a cut to squeeze Starling Marte on the 40-man roster.
Roby and Cijntje sent down
The Cardinals announced that the team reassigned 10 players who were non-roster invites to Minor League camp. Those players were Jurrangelo Cijntje, Pete Hansen, Austin Love, Ixan Henderson, Hancel Rincon, Sem Robberse, Jared Shuster, Zack Thompson, Graysen Tarlow, and Mike Antico.
Additionally, Tekoah Roby was optioned to Triple-A Memphis.
The headlining name among the group was Cijntje, who was the centerpiece of the return received from the Brendan Donovan trade. Cijntje, who finished 2025 in Double-A, struck out two over two scoreless innings in Grapefruit League action.
Love, who had one of the highest swing-and-miss rates in the Texas League last season, walked two and struck out one over 2.1 IP.
Roby did not pitch in Florida.
Suwinski outrighted by Dodgers
The Dodgers sent Jack Suwinski outright to Triple-A Oklahoma City on March 2.
Suwinski was claimed off waivers by the Dodgers from the Pirates in February.
Padres sign Verdugo
Per multiple reports, including the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Padres have added Alex Verdugo on a Minor League deal.
Verdugo will fight for a roster spot on a Padres team that’s deeper on paper in the outfield now compared to 2025. That’s thanks to the additions of Ramon Laureano and Miguel Andujar, although the two are right-handed hitters. Verdugo is a left-handed hitter.
The 29-year-old slashed .239/.296/.289 over 213 plate appearances last season.
Other notes
The Mariners signed catcher Jacob Nottingham to a Minor League deal.
Royals outfielder Dairon Blanco was designated for assignment. It was a corresponding move to add Starling Marte, who officially signed with the team on March 2.
