Now that Spring Training has officially gotten underway, moves have become far and few for now. However, there was some action this week. Not only were the Padres active but so was division rival Los Angeles. The Dodgers, on February 21, added ex-Pirate Jack Suwinski off waivers.
Dodgers add Suwinski
The Dodgers claimed former Pirate Jack Suwinski for assignment.
Suwinski, as noted earlier this week, has been designated for assignment by Pittsburgh. The ex-Pirate was at one point a very promising power-hitting outfielder for the organization but struck out a lot and failed to solidify a spot on the team’s roster. He spent a good chunk of time in Indianapolis (AAA) last season.
The new Dodger is an interesting project player for the Dodgers. Plus bat speed and a low chase, both at the Majors in the Minors (22% Chase in Triple-A) last season. However, a lot of swing-and-misses. Fastballs (29% Whiff% on four-seamers in 2025 (AAA)) gave him trouble at multiple levels of play
Minor League signings
Here’s a look at some of the Minor League contracts handed out this past week:
- CJ Alexander (Astros)
- Mark Canha (Rangers)
- Santiago Espinal (Dodgers)
- Adam Frazier (Angels)
- Oscar Mercado (Diamondbacks)
- Joe Ross (Diamondbacks)
- Dominic Smith (Braves)
- Alika Williams (Pirates)
- Austin Voth (White Sox)
- Kyle Wright (Cubs)
Mark Canha will look to continue his MLB career, as he joined the Rangers on a Minor League deal. Canha made the same move with the Brewers last season. It was a decision that worked out for him, as the Brewers traded him to the Royals, as Kansas City was looking for outfield help and picked up his contract.
However, Canha slashed .212/.272/.265 in 46 games.
Dominic Smith saw a good amount of playing time last season with the Giants. The 30-year-old received 225 plate appearances in 2025 and hit well in limited action. Smith hit five home runs and posted a .750 OPS.
Former Phillie Joe Ross and ex-Brave Kyle Wright also found new homes, as did former Pirate Adam Frazier.
Other moves
The Cardinals designated Zak Kent for assignment.
