NL West outfielders were on the move. The Giants called up Scott Bandura, one of several outfielders within the system who’ve enjoyed breakout campaigns. As for the Diamondbacks, the club designated Lourdes Gurriel Jr. after nearly four seasons with the team.

Gurriel Jr. cut by Arizona

The Diamondbacks designated outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. for assignment on September 13.

It likely ends Gurriel Jr.’s time with Arizona, which started after he was acquired for Daulton Varsho and Gabriel Moreno from Toronto four years ago. He was a monster in 2024 for the D-Backs during their run to the National League pennant three years ago, hitting 24 home runs.

But in an injury-filled 2026 season, Gurriel Jr. slashed .210/.254/.290 with just two home runs and 11 extra-base hits over 201 plate appearances.

Gurriel Jr. re-signed on a three-year deal after 2023, which also came with a 2027 club option.

Giants select outfielder

The Giants selected outfielder Scott Bandura from Triple-A Sacramento.

Bandura, a 25-year-old outfielder who was a seventh-round pick out of Princeton three years ago, enjoyed a breakout 2026 season. He slashed .320/.407/.488 with 13 home runs and 55 extra-base hits over 131 contests between Double-A and Triple-A.

With the River Cats, he had 41 extra-base hits, as well as 24 stolen bases, over 94 games. Bandura also drew a lot of walks, with 73 overall this season.

Recalls & options

Jose Fernandez (Diamondbacks), David Sandlin (White Sox), Drew Rom (Athletics), and Yaramil Hiraldo (Orioles) were recalled.

Grant Holman (Phillies), Joey Estes (Athletics), Tyler Schweitzer (White Sox), Eddy Yean (Nationals), and Franco Aleman (Guardians) were optioned to the Minors.

Other notes

The Guardians selected pitcher Connor Brogdon from Triple-A Columbus.

Phillies infielder Christian Cairo was designated for assignment.
