The Marlins hit Andrew Painter hard on the 17th, as the rookie righty gave up six earned runs (two home runs) over two frames. Now, Painter will get a reset as he will go north to Lehigh Valley. Plus, the Guardians called up former first-rounder Kahlil Watson.

Painter optioned to Triple-A

After his most recent start on June 17, the Phillies optioned pitcher Andrew Painter to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Painter, across the last 30 days, has been one of the league’s worst statistical pitchers. The rookie had a 9.70 ERA across his last five outings (four starts), allowing 33 hits over 21.1 IP for the Phillies.

Seven of those hits allowed were home runs.

Painter has been with the Phillies since he made the team’s roster out of camp.

Guardians promote former first-rounder

The Guardians promoted Kahlil Watson from Triple-A Columbus to replace an injured Chase DeLauter.

Watson was acquired by Cleveland three years ago, along with Jean Segura, for Josh Bell from the Marlins. The 16th overall pick from the 2021 MLB Draft, Watson has hit well in Triple-A this season.

The 23-year-old slashed .255/.370/.491 with 12 home runs and 25 extra-base hits this season for the Clippers.

Trades

The Angels acquired catcher Tyler Heineman from the Blue Jays in a cash trade. Heineman, who slashed .154/.205/.205 this season for Toronto, was worked out of the Jays’ depth chart after the return of Alejandro Kirk from the IL, plus the emergence of rookie Brandon Valenzuela.

Kansas City acquired former Twins pitcher Randy Dobnak from the Mariners for cash.
