The Rays added some infield depth to their big-league roster on September 8, as Nick Madrigal joined the club in Atlanta. The Padres, meanwhile, added organizational pitching depth by bringing back reliever Trevor Gott.

Madrigal back in Majors

Nick Madrigal is back in the Majors, as the Rays selected his contract from Triple-A Durham.

Madrigal spent 2026 split between the Angels and Rays’ Triple-A affiliates. Tampa signed him in late June after Madrigal elected free agency after being outrighted to Triple-A by the Angels.

He hit .299/.385/.389 between the two Triple-A clubs this season. However, Madrigal’s seen very brief time at the big-league level in 2026. The former first-rounder played in just 15 games and picked up 44 at-bats with Los Angeles (AL).

In a corresponding move, reliever Hunter Bigge was designated for assignment.

Padres bring back Gott

The Padres signed reliever Trevor Gott to a Minor League deal.

Gott started his professional career over a decade ago in the Padres organization in 2023. One year later, he was traded to the Angels for Huston Street before turning himself into a Major League reliever who bounced around over the years.

The veteran spent 2025 with the Nationals’ Triple-A affiliate before he was released in July. He struck out 27 over 33 innings with Rochester.

Gott was assigned to Triple-A El Paso.

Recalls & options

Brett Harris (Giants), Kade Strowd (Diamondbacks), Zak Kent (Nationals), and Brandon Eisert (Pirates) were recalled from the Minors.

Cesar Prieto (Cardinals), Gerado Carrillo (Diamondbacks), Jose Cabrera (Diamondbacks), and Zach Morgan (Giants) were optioned.

Other notes

Max Kepler (Diamondbacks), Sam Moll (Reds), Jose Suarez (Athletics), and Blake Hunt (Padres) were released.

Albert Suarez (Orioles) and Oliver Dunn (Rays) were sent outright to Triple-A.
