The final day before the 2026 All-Star Game break saw several significant moves. Boston cut reliever Danny Coulombe on the 12th, while the Nationals called up one of their better-hitting prospects for the first time in his pro career.
Red Sox cut Coulombe, promote Bello
The Red Sox designated reliever Danny Coulombe for assignment.
Coulombe’s results were very mixed with Boston. A .299 opponents’ wOBA, which ranked above the league median among relievers with 20+ appearances this year. However, the Red Sox left-hander only struck out 10 and walked 15 over 22 innings this year for Boston.
Brayan Bello, who was demoted earlier in the year after a tough stint in the Red Sox’s rotation, was called back up. Bello struck out 22 over 18 IP with Worcester, allowing 22 hits and nine earned runs.
Ortiz promoted by Nationals
Washington recalled first baseman Abimelec Ortiz from Triple-A Rochester.
Ortiz was one of the players acquired by Washington in the trade that sent MacKenzie Gore to Texas. A terrific power hitter, Ortiz hit 16 home runs over 71 contests with the Red Wings.
Recalls & options
Zach Thornton (Mets), Dax Fulton (Marlins), and Chase Petty (Reds) were recalled from the Minors.
Garrett Stallings (Brewers), Coleman Crow (Brewers), Jack Anderson (Twins), Nick Sogard (Red Sox), Noah Murdock (Pirates), and Tobias Myers (Mets) were optioned down to the Minors.
Other notes
The Brewers designated outfielder Greg Jones for assignment. Additionally, Milwaukee traded for infielder Braden Shewmake in a cash deal with the Astros. Shewmake was DFA’d shortly before the trade.
Washington designated reliever Matt Krook for assignment.
