If you’re a baseball fan and have cut the cord in recent years, you’re probably wondering whether you can watch in-market Major League Baseball (MLB) games on MLB.TV. MLB.TV shows out-of-market games to baseball fans and blacks out ones in-market to protect regional sports networks, but can a VPN help with that in 2024? We have an answer.

MLB.TV and a VPN

Yes, we can confirm that MLB.TV users can, in fact, watch blacked-out games with a virtual private network (VPN) in 2024 provided that the VPN is set to a location outside of the home market.

However, one should note that there are some quirks in our testing of a VPN with MLB.TV.

We found that when a VPN is active and set to a destination in the United States, an error message may pop up on the app version (i.e. Fire TV). But when set to a destination outside of the U.S. — in our testing, we used Canada — this issue did not show up.

VPNs can be a crapshoot at times when it comes to using one to stream games. Part of that is because some apps, like the ESPN app, for example, either don’t redirect for location or simply can’t be opened if set to a location outside of the U.S.

Another wrinkle is that to start 2024, Major League Baseball itself is selling in-market season packages to watch the Rockies, Diamondbacks, and Padres’ local games. This came off the heels of changes within Bally Sports and the old AT&T Sportsnet regional network systems.

What is a VPN?

A VPN can mask the actual location of a user, and allow that individual to appear in a completely different part of the globe.

Thus, it will unlock access to games on MLB.TV that is usually not available to the everyday fan. That is because of MLB.TV’s purpose is to give baseball fans access to out-of-market games.

In our personal testing, we used ExpressVPN. However, other VPNs like NordVPN or even a browser extension that shifts the user’s IP address should theoretically work, as well.
