Sunny skies engulfed Florida today, meaning Grapefruit League games were able to resume yet again on February 25. Max Scherzer made his Blue Jays debut, while several notable sluggers made impacts on what was a busy day of Cactus & Grapefruit League action.

Scherzer makes Blue Jays debut

Max Scherzer made his Spring Training debut with the Blue Jays on February 25, almost a month after he signed with Toronto. Scherzer used the ABS system to challenge two called balls, both of which he lost. The right-hander stated he was skeptical about the new system.

“What are we actually changing here?…There are going to be strikes changed to balls, and balls changed to strikes. So, we’re going to basically be even. Are we actually going to improve the game? Are the umpires really that bad? I don’t think so,” Scherzer told reporters after the game.

The Blue Jays hurler did fine overall, as he struck out four over two innings.

As for other Blue Jays-related performances, Ernie Clement and Andres Gimenez each notched multi-hit games. Bowden Francis, who was scheduled to pitch on the 24th but pushed back thanks to rain, threw two innings in relief.

Other tidbits

Reynaldo Lopez struck out two over two in the Braves’ 6-1 game against the Red Sox, a split-squad home game for Atlanta. Marcell Ozuna went 1-2 with a home run in the fourth inning.

Blake Snell threw a scoreless frames in the Dodgers’ 11-5 loss to Seattle on February 25. Julio Rodriguez went 1-3 with a double and two RBI. Mitch Garver hit his first home run of the spring, a solo shot off Ben Casparius.

The Royals and Rangers scored a combined 21 runs during their game at Surprise Stadium. Jonathan India notched two hits in Kansas City’s 15-6 victory, as did Vinnie Pasquantino. India is currently hitting .429 this spring.

In other news, the Nationals re-signed All-Star closer Kyle Finnegan to a one-year deal.
