The third week of the 2026 Minor League season saw some mammoth performances. Two former standouts from the CAA went off in the California League, while ex-Major Leaguer JJ Bleday hit well in Triple-A as he looks for a return to the bigs. Then, two 2024 first-rounders are rounding into form down in Double-A.
King building on something in April
It was another good week for Nationals shortstop Seaver King. The 2024 first-round pick had eight hits and two home runs, along with nine RBI, over the last week with Double-A Harrisburg.
Given how much infield depth the Nationals have, King’s strong week is a sign that Washington fans shouldn’t forget about him.
Yes, Washington added a lot of shortstops to the system over the last year. Eli Willits was drafted first overall last July, Ronny Cruz came over in the Michael Soroka trade last year & was red-hot in Low-A before he was promoted to High-A on the 20th, and Gavin Fien & Devin Fitz-Gerald — the latter of whom has ripped it up in Wilmington — came over in the MacKenzie Gore trade.
Yet, things have turned for King in 2026. Last year, he was a highly aggressive hitter. This year, he’s been extremely selective. His 15 walks on the season are almost half of what King picked up all of last season (32).
Montgomery goes off in Double-A
Much of the prospect conversation in Chicago has been around Noah Schultz and Sam Antonacci, both of whom made their MLB debuts last week. But in Double-A, Braden Montgomery stole the show.
Montgomery picked up a Southern League-high 12 hits for the Birmingham Barons. Eight of those were extra-base hits, and one was a home run.
The 23-year-old hit .358 with four home runs and a 1.211 OPS over 15 games in Double-A this season.
Wilkinson, Akron author no-hitter
The Tugboat helped the Guardians’ Double-A affiliate pitch a no-hitter this past week.
Matt Wilkinson struck out six over five shutout innings against Binghamton (NYM) on the 19th. Four Rubberducks relievers finished the job for Akron.
Believe it or not, that wasn’t the only Minor League no-no on the day. Marlins prospect Aiden May struck out five over six scoreless innings for High-A Beloit. Justin Storm finished the game with three no-hit innings of his own.
