After years of waiting, Twins fans will get a chance to see Emmanuel Rodriguez on the field at Target Field. Rodriguez, one of the top prospects in the Minnesota system, was recalled to the big-league roster after he hit well in another injury-riddled year.
A Look at Rodriguez
For years, Twins outfielder prospect Emmanuel Rodriguez has been one of the most exciting prospects in the system. That was true from the onset of his pro career, when he hit 10 home runs as an 18-year-old in the FCL. But after he nearly posted a 20-20 season in High-A in 2023, it felt like Rodriguez was going to be a star in the making.
While the ceiling is still high, it’s been a grind to see him on the field. Rodriguez played just 47 games in 2024. Last year, hip and oblique injuries limited Rodriguez to 65 games. This year, the 23-year-old spent three months on the IL. He landed there in May and wasn’t activated
Still, the numbers were noticeable. Over 49 contests, Rodriguez slashed .262/.414/.500 with 11 home runs and 18 extra-base hits with Triple-A St. Paul.
From a statistical standpoint, Rodriguez is somewhat of a typical power hitter. Rodriguez sported a high Barrel% against all pitch types this year, including four-seam fastballs (21.1%) and sliders (16.7%). However, there is a heavy swing-and-miss element to his game.
Not only did that show up in his brief time with the Twins in Spring Training this past year but als in the Minors.
Split up by pitch, Rodriguez had a Whiff% on changeups of 53% this season, 40% on sliders, and 27% on four-seam fastballs. But what is more of a concern is the fact that Rodriguez was regularly getting beat inside the strike zone. This wasn’t much of a concern when pitchers left the ball right in the middle of the strike zone. However, it was with fastballs up & soft stuff down.
Just over the last couple of weeks, Rodriguez had an in-zone Whiff% of 21.1%. It doesn’t sound high but remember, this is for balls in the strike zone. That number was well below the Triple-A median.
It’s also worth noting that Rodriguez, despite the high Whiff% marks, doesn’t expand out of the zone too much. Since his return from the IL, Rodriguez has had just a 20% Chase%. Throughout his Minor League career, he’s always had a penchant for walks.
Defensively, Rodriguez is a primary center fielder. He has also seen some time in right field.
The Twins officially selected Emmanuel Rodriguez for the first time on September 12.
Analysis
Rodriguez’s clock started ticking back in November 2023, when the Twins added him to the 40-man roster. But because of injuries — Rodriguez is likely up with the Twins much sooner — these past few years have been more about just getting him on the field, as opposed to thinking about bringing him up.
Things, though, are obviously different for Minnesota. The Twins will be without Byron Buxton for the rest of the 2026 season. Buxton will have season-ending hip surgery later this month. And while the Twins haven’t been eliminated this season, the odds of the club making it to the playoffs are very low.
So, this does offer the club an opportunity to see what exactly they have with Rodriguez. As of 2026, Rodriguez doesn’t have any options left after 2026. So, Minnesota has to go into 2027 with the idea that the 23-year-old will be a part of the roster.
From a talent standpoint, that’s not a problem. Rodriguez has proven he can hit Triple-A pitching. The problem is the risk factor. Even though the upside is high, as Rodriguez could be a potential 20-20 hitter at the MLB level, can he A) adjust to MLB pitching and B) more importantly, stay healthy?
It’s worth noting that as of 2026, Rodriguez has not played more than 99 regular-season games in any year of his pro career.
