The Chicago Cubs were in prime position to make it back to the postseason after an 18-9 August. However, a 12-16 September knocked the Cubs out of contention. So, what did the Cubs do to improve their chances for the 2024 campaign? Here’s our Cubs offseason recap.

Notable Additions
- RP Yency Almonte
- INF Michael Busch
- RP Hector Neris
- SP Shota Imanaga
The Cubs added another lefty to their rotation in Shota Imanaga this past winter. The lefty, known for a fastball with plus carry and good secondary stuff, joined the Cubs this offseason and a rotation that includes Justin Steele, Kyle Hendricks, and Jameson Taillon.
On the bullpen side, the Cubs added one of the better late-inning relievers available in Hector Neris. Neris and his plus splitter are headed to Chicago on a one-year deal.
The Cubs further bolstered their relief core with Yency Almonte, who came to Chicago with infield prospect Michael Busch. However, the move cost the Cubs a projectable lefty in Jackson Ferris and Zyhir Hope, the latter of whom was a former UNC recruit and hit well in his brief taste of pro ball.
Now, a look at the subtractions part of our Cubs offseason recap.
Notable Subtractions
- RP Brad Boxberger
- INF Jeimer Candelario
- RP Michael Fulmer
- RP Brandon Hughes
- RP Codi Heuer
- SP Marcus Stroman
Imanaga could be considered the replacement for Marcus Stroman, who pitched exceptionally well for Chicago in the first half but dealt with a rib cage fracture in the second. Stroman is now a member of the Yankees.
The other notable loss was Jeimer Candelario, who was acquired by Chicago at the 2023 deadline. Candelario joined the Reds this past winter.
However, one piece the Cubs didn’t lose was Cody Bellinger. Bellinger re-signed with the Cubs on a three-year deal in February, albeit one with opt-outs.
What to Expect from 2024
The NL Central is expected to be a wide-open one in 2024. Milwaukee dealt Corbin Burnes this past winter but has pieces that can keep the Brewers competitive. Cincinnati improved greatly in 2023 and could take that next step in 2024, while the Cardinals look for a rebound after a tough 2023.
The Cubs, who nearly made the playoffs in 2023 but faltered late, are one of those teams that will be in the mix.
A top-of-the-rotation of Justin Steele and Shota Imanaga is an intriguing one. But, the Cubs will need the back half to pitch well. And on offense, there’s plenty of talent in this lineup, one that looks better with Bellinger.
