2024 Fantasy Baseball: Pitchers to Target on the Waiver Wire (Week 25)

It’s the final week of the 2024 fantasy baseball season and it’s time to empty the tank — unless of course, you didn’t manage your innings properly. For those who have innings and strikeouts to make up in fantasy, or looking for maximize the last week of playoffs, here’s a look at our best pitchers to target for Week 25.

Here’s a look at the best waiver wire targets for Week 25 of the 2024 fantasy baseball season, based on availability (>= 50% availability in Yahoo! leagues):

The day off for many teams on September 23, coupled with several teams playing just five games, makes it difficult to find starters who will go twice this week on the waiver wire. However, a young pitcher with the Cardinals should get two starts unless St. Louis mixes things up.

With Sonny Gray on the IL, pitching prospect Michael McGreevy will get a turn in the rotation on September 24. McGreevy is an interesting prospect, as he didn’t get a ton of strikeouts (138 over 150 IP in Triple-A) with Memphis but does work batters well with his sinker. The sinker will come in handy on the 24th when he takes the ball in Coors Field. Should St. Louis not add a sixth man to their rotation, McGreevy lines up to face the Giants this weekend.

Speaking of young pitchers, how about Cade Povich? Povich came into play on the 22nd tied with Aaron Nola for the fifth-most strikeouts (30) in September. It’s a great step forward for Povich, who racked up strikeouts in Triple-A thanks to an above-average four-seamer that plays up with carry and plenty of junk to pair with it. His 3.27 ERA in September is good, too.

Two more youngsters round out the starters’ portion of our last list of 2024. Rhett Lowder threw five scoreless frames on September 21, his third outing in four MLB starts in which he yielded one or fewer runs. He’ll line up to face the Cubs during the last weekend of the season.

Keider Montero, a low strikeout pitcher — 73 over 92.2 IP — with Detroit will get the Rays on September 25. It’s a good opportunity to snatch a win, as Montero will look to keep the Tigers in playoff position. In his last start, he struck out seven but did give up five runs in what was his second start in five days against the Orioles.

Lastly, Kenley Jansen will hit the IL and miss the final week of the season. Chris Martin, used heavily in the eighth inning this season, figures to be a nice save option this week. However, Greg Weissert and Justin Slaten are other names to watch in Boston for saves.

Other considerations

Clarke Schmidt (SP)

Clarke Schmidt has an opportunity to make two starts over this last week, starting with September 24 against the O’s. He would line up to face the Pirates on regular rest on the 29th, as well. Schmidt’s been excellent this season, as he struck out 81 over his first 76 innings and owns a strong 2.37 ERA. His cutter, which has a 31.9% Whiff% this season, has been a game-changer.

Brandon Pfaadt will San Francisco on September 24. Pfaadt ranks among the league’s best in strikeouts (27) this month. But, the 7.58 September ERA is ugly.
