Here’s a look at our best MLB bets for May 10 (odds via BetMGM New York Sportsbook):
- Casey Mize over 3.5 strikeouts (-120)
- Tanner Houck over 1.5 earned runs (-175)
We’ll start with Casey Mize, who’s struck out four or more batters in three of his last four starts, dating back to April 16.
The top pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, Mize isn’t a strikeout pitcher, as he’s traditionally a groundball pitcher with a hard fastball that plays up with extension, along with a slider that has depth and gets topped contact and a splitter that’s his primary whiff pitch.
Still, an over/under of 3.5 is low for Mize, especially since he can induce whiffs and he’ll pitch at home against the Astros. Marcus Stroman (5), Carlos Rodon (7), and Luis Gil (5) all struck out five or more batters in Houston’s most recent series against the Yankees.
As for our second pick, Tanner Houck sports a sparkling 1.99 ERA and has been one of the AL’s best pitchers over the first six weeks of 2024. However, he’ll face a Nationals team that can hit, despite the fact Washington is in the bottom half of the league in runs scored (151) and OPS (.671).
The Nationals have scored 20 runs over their last three games, including an 11-run performance on May 5. Eddie Rosario and Jesse Winker have multiple two-hit games in that span.
Houck’s surrendered two or more earned runs in two of his last three starts.
