Here’s a look at our best MLB bets for May 17 (odds via BetMGM New York Sportsbook):
- Christian Scott over 5.5 strikeouts (-125)
- Tarik Skubal over 5.5 strikeouts (-160)
We’re going with two over strikeout props and we’ll start with Christian Scott. The Mets rookie pitched very well in his brief MLB career to this point and Scott showed he can beat elite offenses on May 11, when he struck out eight Braves over six innings.
Scott will face the Marlins, who as of May 16 owned the second-lowest team OPS (.621) and the twelfth-highest Whiff% (25.7%) in the league. In Miami’s last two games, Reese Olson (6) and Casey Mize (6) both hit the over on this mark.
As for our second pick, Tarik Skubal will get the D-Backs on the road. An early frontrunner for the AL Cy Young, Skubal struck out seven Astros on May 11 to give him 60 strikeouts over 49.1 IP. He’s struck out six or more in each of his last five outings.
He’ll face an Arizona team that doesn’t whiff (22.1%) much but this is a team that looks far from the group that won the NL pennant in 2023. Corbin Carroll owns just a .539 OPS, while Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (.655 OPS) has also had a tough start to 2024.
