The Memorial Day weekend has arrived and so has a jam-packed baseball schedule for the next few days. Several key weekend series will begin on May 24, including a tilt in San Diego between the Yankees and Padres, and a clash in St. Louis between NL Central rivals, the Cubs and Cardinals. Here’s a look at our best MLB bets for May 24 (odds via BetMGM New York Sportsbook):
- Diamondbacks -1.5 spread (+120)
- Patrick Sandoval under 5.5 strikeouts (-135)
We’ll start with the Diamondbacks, who will face Miami in Arizona on May 24. The D-Backs will have ace — and former Marlins farmhand — Zac Gallen on the hill, who’s been a steady hand for Arizona in May.
Across three May starts, Gallen threw at least six innings in each outing and conceded three or fewer runs in all three. He’ll go for an Arizona team that’s been going well as of late despite the 24-26 start.
The D-Backs won three of their last four games, two of which came against the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers. Christian Walker and Ketel Marte hit home runs in Arizona’s most recent game, a 6-0 victory.
As for our second pick, Patrick Sandoval will face the Guardians on May 24. This is a curious matchup on paper, as Cleveland is among the best teams in avoiding whiffs (24.1%). Yet, the Guardians have the 12th-worst K% (22.6%) against left-handed pitching.
Sandoval’s a good strikeout pitcher in his own right. However, he’ll face a Guardians offense that’s been very productive over the last two weeks. In seven of Cleveland’s last 10 games, the Guardians have scored five or more runs. In the Guardians’ last series, Adrian Houser and Jose Quintana did not get more than four strikeouts.
