The 2024 MLB season is on and so is the AL Rookie of the Year race. Several youngsters have already made their MLB debut to begin the 2024 campaign, while other candidates for the award could make this race very interesting. Here’s a look at the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year race, including odds and our power rankings.

Power rankings
Here’s a look at our September power rankings for the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year:

Much like with the NL Rookie of the Year race, this one is virtually a wrap. Orioles outfielder Colton Cowser doesn’t have a high bWAR (2.3) as of September 3 but he’s been arguably the most consistent rookie in the American League. Cowser led AL rookies in home runs (20) and has been a key stabilizer for the Orioles outfield this season.
Catcher Austin Wells has posted a good rookie season as of writing, as the budding Yankees slugger recorded a .774 OPS. However, much of his success came in the second half of 2024. As of September 3, Wells hit .298/.384/.508 with six home runs and 22 RBI, compared to .216/.309/.377 over 61 games before the All-Star break.
The one name who’s fallen significantly on this list since the summer is Luis Gil. Gil was at +500 to win the AL Rookie of the Year after a dominant stretch to begin 2024. However, command issues have done him in at times, as had a loss of velocity during some of his outings. It’s not surprising, given Gil missed all of 2023.
When is the AL Rookie of the Year winner announced?
The AL Rookie of the Year Award winner is traditionally revealed after the conclusion of the postseason.
