It’s Tuesday across Major League Baseball, a day that should see some interesting action on the diamond. The Beltway Series rivalry resumes in Baltimore, while the Yankees will look to get back on track after New York was blown out by the White Sox on August 12. Here’s a look at our best MLB bets for August 13 (odds via BetMGM New York Sportsbook):
- Yordan Alvarez over 1.5 H+R+RBI (-135)
- Pirates/Padres over eight runs (+100)
It’s hard to go against Yordan Alvarez right now. Alvarez is having a sensational 2024, as he came into play on August 13 with a .957 OPS and 25 home runs on the year. But recently, the Astros outfielder’s been scorching hot at the plate. In August, Alvarez is batting .432 with five home runs, 10 runs scored, and 16 hits. He’s hit the over 1.5 marker in this category in every single game August game sans one, on August 5.
Alvarez will face right-hander Shane Baz in Tropicana Field. Nineteen of Alvarez’s 25 home runs are against right-handed pitching this season.
As for our second pick, the Pirates and Padres combined for just three runs on the 12th, thanks to stellar work by Joe Musgrove and the Padres bullpen. However, things could be different on August 13.
Pirates scheduled starter Luis Ortiz, a pitch-to-contact hurler who doesn’t get many whiffs, has given up at least three earned runs in his last three starts. Included in that stretch was an outing on August 8, in which he surrendered four to the Padres. Manny Machado and David Peralta hit home runs off Ortiz.
Meanwhile, Michael King has been terrific in terms of strikeouts but struggled last week during the Pirates/Padres series at PNC Park. King surrendered three earned runs (four total) over five innings and is sometimes susceptible to command issues. He owns a 3.3 BB/9 rate this season, his highest since 2021.
