Labor Day is past us, and now the stretch run gets into gear. September 3 will bring a whirlwind of action, highlighted by Paul Skenes going up against the Cubs and Shohei Ohtani’s regular-season return to Anaheim. So, what looks good on the betting front? Here’s a look at our best MLB bets for September 3, 2024.
Best hit props
Let’s start with our best hit props:
- Zach Neto over 0.5 hits (-175)
- Anthony Volpe over 0.5 hits (-190)
- Jorge Soler over 0.5 hits (-250)
The Dodgers are going to Anaheim to face the Angels, and Walker Buehler will take the hill for the opener. Buehler’s been particularly hittable this season, as his Whiff% rate is down over five points from his pre-surgery season in 2022. Thus far, Buehler’s concerned 62 hits over 49 innings. The Dodgers starter’s struggles mean opportunity and Zach Neto is worth a look here.
Aside from Neto, look at Anthony Volpe and Jorge Soler. Volpe will face a lefty, Andrew Heaney, on September 3. His numbers against lefties (.252 AVG, .656 OPS) are almost even with his production against righties (.254 AVG, .702). However, Volpe has been on a run of late. The Yankees shortstop has hits in six of his last seven contests.
Jorge Soler, meanwhile, will get a favorable matchup at home against Kyle Freeland and the Rockies. Freeland has given up 60 hits over 41.2 IP on the road this season.
Best strikeout & outs props
- Luis Castillo over 6.5 strikeouts (-135)
- David Peterson under 5.5 strikeouts (+110)
This will be the second time Luis Castillo will face the A’s this season. In his last outing against Oakland on May 12, Castillo struck out eight batters over six frames. The 31-year-old rates above-average in terms of chases and whiffs and it’s shown in the strikeout column. Castillo posted seven or more strikeouts in four of his last six games.
As for David Peterson, he’ll face a Red Sox team that’s seventh in the Majors in Whiff% (27.4%) this season. However, Peterson loves his sinker, which has helped him greatly when it comes to working batters down in the zone. The Mets lefty has five or fewer strikeouts in four of his last five games.
Best moneylines
- Braves ML (-375)
- Orioles ML (-300)
- Mariners ML (-155)
It’s not hard to go against the White Sox this season, as Chicago (AL) has just four wins since the All-Star break. The Sox will get the O’s again on September 3. As for the Braves, Atlanta will send Chris Sale to the hill against Kyle Freeland, who struggles on the road. Freeland has a 7.34 ERA/1.73 WHIP away from Coors Field.
Seattle will send Luis Castillo to the mound in Oakland, to face the A’s.
