It’s tough for pitchers to win the Rookie of the Year. The last pitcher to win to do so was in 2020 (Devin Williams), and the last starter to win one was Michael Fulmer in 2016. Paul Skenes was poised to end that drought earlier this year after a dominant start upon his promotion. The Pirates ace owned a 1.90 ERA and struck out 89 over 66.1 IP. His dominance was so profound that betting books began to shut down bets on the Rookie of the Year.
Since then, things have changed. Jackson Merrill has gone on a heater since the All-Star break, as he batted .320/.350/.620 with nine home runs and 33 RBI across his first 40 games after the Midsummer Classic. He entered play on September 3 just four stolen bases shy of a 20-20 season and could conceivably end 2024 with 90+ RBI.
In fact, Skenes may not finish in the top two of Rookie of the Year voting, especially with how Jackson Chourio has hit of late. Chourio, like, Merrill, has been hot over the second half and could hit the 20-20 marker himself.
It wouldn’t be a shock to see Merrill and Chourio finish 1-2 in the vote. And had this not been such a strong crop of NL rookies, Masyn Winn might have been in the conversation. Winn is second in the NL in defensive bWAR (2.2), behind Brice Turang.
When is the NL Rookie of the Year winner announced?
The NL Rookie of the Year Award winner is traditionally revealed in November, after the conclusion of the postseason.
