Nationals outfielder Dylan Crews has been on a groove of late. However, that was shut down on May 20 when Crews left the Braves/Nationals game with an injury. Crews hit the IL on May 21, as did a future Hall of Famer.
Crews on IL
The Nationals placed outfielder Dylan Crews on the IL, one day after he left Washington’s game against the Braves. Officially, he was placed on the injured list with a left oblique strain.
However, what’s not yet known is how severe the strain is; thus, it’s unclear the exact timeframe Crews will be out. Washington promoted outfielder Robert Hassell III, the former first-round pick, on the 21st to replace Crews.
The 2025 campaign has been an interesting one for Crews, who goes on the IL with seven home runs and 11 stolen bases over 173 games. His problem has been swing-and-misses, hence the .197 average and 27.2% K%.
Verlander out for Giants
San Francisco announced after their game on May 21 that Justin Verlander will land on the injured list with pectoral discomfort. Per manager Bob Melvin, he’s dealing with nerve irritation in the pectoral area.
The 42-year-old has had an adventurous May despite a good 3.80 ERA after 21.1 innings. Verlander walked nine and gave up 22 hits in that span.
Rehab assignments
Brandon Woodruff was shut down a week ago from his rehab assignment after dealing with ankle tendinitis. He was back with Nashville (AAA) on May 21, and Woodruff threw four scoreless innings with two strikeouts. The Brewers’ righty touched 94 MPH in the outing.
Ronald Acuna Jr., meanwhile, played the entire game in right field on May 21. The former NL MVP went 1-4.
Mets pitcher Paul Blackburn struck out six over seven scoreless innings.
Detroit had three players on rehab assignments with Lakeland (A). Wenceel Perez went 1-2, while Parker Meadows went 1-3. Those two did not play the entire game. Matt Vierling did, and he went 0-3.
Blue reliever Ryan Burr tossed one inning for Dunedin (A) on May 21. He gave up three hits and two earned runs. Erik Swanson went 0.2 IP and struck out one in the same game.
