The news came fast & furious on May 30. Several notable pitchers are done for 2025 & require Tommy John surgery, while a pair of former MVPs remain day-to-day with injuries. Plus, notes on rehab assignments.

AJSS done for 2025

AJ Smith-Shawver is done for 2025. One day after he left his start against the Phillies and placed on the injured list, he was diagnosed with a torn UCL in his throwing elbow.

It’ll keep him out for a healthy chunk of 2026, as well.

Additionally, the Braves also placed outfielder Stuart Fairchild on the 10-day IL with a dislocated pinky finger. Fairchild sustained the injury sliding into second base during Game 1 of Atlanta’s doubleheader on May 29.

Harper still sore

Bryce Harper spoke to reporters on May 30. The Phillies first baseman said the swelling on his elbow, sustained via a hit by pitch from Spencer Strider, has gone down.

However, it’s still sore per Harper and there’s no timetable for an exact return.

“I just want to be smart about it…I’m not sure when I’m going to play again,” Harper said about his elbow.

He remains day-to-day.

Santander on IL

Toronto placed Anthony Santander on the 10-day IL, officially, with left shoulder inflammation. Alan Roden was recalled to replace Santander.

However, he’s been dealing with hip and shoulder issues throughout May.

Rehab assignments

The Tigers moved Alex Cobb to the 60-day IL on the 30th as a procedural move. However, Cobb also started a rehab assignment on the day. Cobb threw two scoreless innings and struck out three for West Michigan (A+).

Diamondbacks pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez struck out nine over 4.2 IP for Arizona’s ACL affiliate.

Rangers outfielder Evan Carter went 0-3 with a strikeout for Round Rock (AAA). He did not play the whole game.

Guardians reliever Erik Sabrowski went 0.2 IP on May 30 with their ACL affiliate. He walked three,

Other injury news

It was a busy day for outfielders who landed on the injured list. Austin Hays (foot), Cedric Mullins (hamstring), and Lane Thomas (plantar fasciitis) were placed on the 10-day IL.

Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts is day-to-day after stubbing a toe on May 28.

It’s one of several injury notes for the Dodgers, as Evan Phillips is done for the season. Phillips will undergo Tommy John surgery.

Red Sox reliever Liam Hendriks was placed on the injured list with hip inflammation, retroactive to May 28. Another notable reliever, Royals right-hander Lucas Erceg, also went on the IL with a low back strain.

Tigers rookie Jackson Jobe landed on the 15-day IL with a Grade 1 flexor strain.

Byron Buxton (Twins), Thairo Estrada (Rockies), Jake Fraley (Reds), Seth Lugo (Royals), and Jake Mangum (Rays) came off the injured list.
