Despite a prolonged slump between the back half of 2024 and 2025, Adley Rutschman has been the model for durability. However, that streak came to an end on June 21. Rutschman was placed on the injured list with an oblique injury, the first time he’s landed on the IL in his Major League career.

Rutschman on IL for first time

For the first time in his four-year MLB career, Adley Rutschman is on the IL. The Orioles placed Rutschman on the injured list with a left oblique strain, retroactive to June 20.

Rutschman was scratched from the Orioles’ game on June 20 with what was described as abdominal tightness. He underwent an MRI and, subsequently, was placed on the IL with the strain.

Additionally, this is the first time Rutschman’s ever been on the injured list since he was drafted first overall in 2019.

On an aside, Jordan Westburg is day-to-day per the team after he jammed his fingers on their June 21st game against the Yankees.

Sale lands on IL

The Braves placed left-hander Chris Sale on the IL with a fractured left ribcage. It’s retroactive to June 19.

Sale sustained the injury diving for a ground ball off the bat of Juan Soto during his start this week against the Mets, per manager Brian Snitker.

This is Sale’s first IL stint since 2023, when he was still a member of the Red Sox.

Burger hits injured list

One day after Jake Burger exited the Rangers/Pirates game on June 20, Texas placed Burger on the injured list with a left oblique strain.

Burger believes he’ll only need the minimum days on the IL.

Other injury news

The Pirates placed reliever Ryan Borucki on the 15-day IL with low back inflammation.

San Diego activated Bryan Hoeing from the 60-day IL. Hoeing, on the IL since late March with the shoulder strain, has not pitched in a MLB game this season.
