June 15 was a highly active day for the NL West contenders. Aside from the blockbuster trade involving the Giants, both the Dodgers & Padres made waves with injury news. Jackson Merrill will be out for at least the next week, while Los Angeles provided updates on Shohei Ohtani & Roki Sasaki.
Merrill on concussion IL
The Padres will be without Jackson Merrill for the next few days.
San Diego placed Merrill on the 7-day concussion IL on June 15. He suffered the injury during a stolen base attempt on the 14th.
Updates on Dodgers’ pitchers
There was good news & bad news for the Dodgers on June 15, regarding injuries.
Roki Sasaki is no longer throwing, as the rookie right-hander is not comfortable with his shoulder while throwing at full intensity. Right now, the Dodgers have no timeline for a return.
Sasaki, who last pitched on May 9, is currently on the IL with a shoulder impingement.
As for Shohei Ohtani, the Dodgers believe he’s close to pitching in an MLB game. Manager Dave Roberts said Ohtani will pitch in another simulated game this week. If all goes well, it could be his last in his recovery from Tommy John surgery.
Other injury news
As expected, the Twins placed third baseman Royce Lewis on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain.
Texas placed Tyler Mahle on the 10-day IL with right shoulder fatigue. It’s retroactive to June 12.
Colorado made several moves today. The Rockies activated Austin Gomber from the 60-day IL and transferred Ryan Feltner, who was on the 10-day IL with back spasms, to the 60-day IL to make a 40-man roster spot available. Kyle Freeland, though, was placed on the 10-day IL with back stiffness.
Justin Martinez, out for the rest of 2025, was transferred to the 60-day IL.
Logan Gilbert, currently on the injured list, will be activated and is scheduled to start on June 16 against the Red Sox.
