It’s the end of the line for Anthony Rendon with the Angels. Rendon, who never played more than 60 games in any of his six seasons with the team, will have the final year of his seven-year contract bought out by the organization.

The New York Times reported on December 30 that the Angels will buy out the rest of Anthony Rendon‘s contract. Rendon, who is owed $38MM by the team, will have the remainder of that money spread out over the next three to five years.

Per the Orange County Register, Rendon will not retire and, as of now, will not be released.

It’ll end Rendon’s tenure with the Angels, one that began in 2020 after he signed a seven-year, $245MM deal to join Mike Trout and then-Halo Shohei Ohtani in Anaheim. The shortened 2020 campaign was the only full season he played with the Angels. He slashed .286/.418/.497 (.915 OPS) with nine home runs and 21 extra-base hits.

Since then, Rendon played fewer than 60 games in each of the last five years between 2021 and 2025.

Hip surgery ended his 2025 season after 57 games. Between 2021 and 2024, the 35-year-old suffered from multiple groin strains, multiple hip injuries, wrist inflammation, a knee contusion, and a shin contusion.

Rendon left the Nationals after the team won the 2019 World Series. That offseason, Washington instead opted to re-sign Stephen Strasburg to a seven-year, $245MM extension (oddly enough, the same money and term as Rendon, albeit with differences with regard to escalators). Strasburg came off an incredible postseason, one where he struck out 47 over 36 innings and notched five wins.

However, Strasburg only threw 31.1 IP after he inked that contract. Numerous injuries, including thoracic outlet syndrome, took a toll on his career. The Nationals agreed to pay out the remainder of his deal in 2024, allowing Strasburg to officially retire.
