The Mets failed to beat the Marlins on September 28, ending a three-and-a-half-month falter from the best team in baseball record-wise to missing the playoffs altogether. New York, despite pitching woes, had one of the best offenses in baseball, led by Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto, and Pete Alonso. Alonso, on the 28th, confirmed he’ll re-enter free agency this winter.

Alonso to opt out of contract

After the Mets’ last game of 2025, Pete Alonso confirmed that he will opt out of the two-year deal that he signed before Spring Training.

Alonso entered free agency last winter on a down year. His 2024 campaign (.788 OPS, 34 HR, 8.3 Barrel/PA) wasn’t bad by any stretch of the imagination. But, he did post the lowest power numbers of his career and wasn’t particularly strong defensively.

During the 2025 campaign, Alonso scuffled with throwing errors early on and, overall, didn’t shine in terms of Outs Above Average (-9 OAA). He did shine offensively, as he posted a career-best 12.5 Barrel/PA and finished eighth in the Majors in home runs (38), hitting behind MLB walks leader Juan Soto.

Alonso will be 31 when the 2026 campaign starts.

Notable moves over final weekend

Here’s a look at notable players recalled over the last two days of 2025:

The Brewers designated Erick Fedde for assignment on September 28. Fedde was signed by Milwaukee in late August.

Additionally, the Rangers claimed Dom Hamel off waivers. Hamel was claimed by the Orioles a week ago but DFA’d shortly thereafter.
